Ovulation Symptoms

Ovulation is when an egg is released from your ovary from a matured follicle. It usually happens every cycle at about the same time, usually in the middle of your cycle, between days 12-16. The egg will be fresh enough to be fertilized for about 24 hours before it starts to disintegrate. There are several days per month that a woman is fertile… the days leading up to ovulation become increasingly fertile until ovulation. Planning to have sex in the days leading up to this point is a good strategy for achieving conception.

There are ways to help predict when you are at your most fertile. You can keep track on your calendar, you can chart, you can watch for symptoms and you can use ovulation prediction kits (OPKs). Counting on the calendar may be all you need if your cycle is regular and lasts 28 days like clockwork. This works for a lot of women out there. The average ovulation occurs at 14 days after the first day of your period, so as long as you cycle on a regular schedule, this simple method may help you keep track of your fertility.

Charting requires you to take your morning temperature every morning before you get out of bed. Your temperature is then written down on a chart. When you ovulate, your temperature will rise significantly and remain elevated until your period is due. This method shows you when you ovulate, so it provides you with the information of when to expect ovulation and it tells you if your cycle is regular. In order to use charting to predict ovulation, you will need to add checking the quality of your cervical mucus.

During your cycle, your cervical mucus will change as your progress through your cycle. You may have noticed this when you wipe after going to the bathroom. After your period ends, most women will have a dry day or two. Then you may notice a crumbly, opaque whitish discharge, kind of like the texture of rubber cement. This is called "sticky." After that, you may notice it thins out until it is the consistency of lotion. This is called "creamy." From there you may notice a day or so of wetness, where it may feel like you're dripping water occasionally. This is called "wet" or "moist." This last phase is the beginning of fertile mucus. The most fertile phase feels like raw egg white. You may have noticed a large glop when you wipe sometimes. This type of mucus actually helps the sperm reach your cervix more easily. It usually appears just before you ovulate.

Some women also feel symptoms before ovulation. They may feel cramping on one side or another, increased vaginal discharge and breast tenderness. Your cervix also changes position and opens.

If you want more help, you can get ovulation prediction. They include a test similar to a pregnancy test that will get darker as you approach ovulation. These tests are used several days per month as you get close to ovulation.
