You're Pregnant! Week
14
Many women begin having back pain around this time in the
pregnancy if it hasn't shown up before now. The uterus is
suspended from your sacrum and as the weight of the uterus
grows, you'll be feeling it in your back for the rest of your
pregnancy. There are some things you can do to help yourself
feel better.
Keep exercising. This will help your muscles retain their
strength and endurance. Sit in a supported seat. Never lift
anything without bending your knees. As your pregnancy
progresses, don't lift anything heavy, either. A heat or ice
pack can help relieve pain. Massage, chiropractic care and
acupuncture may help as well. Wear comfortable shoes that
support your feet. Sleep on your left side, supported by
pillows to help you find a comfortable position. You don't want
to sleep on your back more than what happens accidentally. One
of your major blood vessels in your body, the vena cava, runs
behind your uterus. When you lay on your back, the weight of
the uterus and baby compress this vessel. When this happens,
you may feel dizzy or nauseous. Lying on your left side will
help to increase your blood flow and keep you comfortable. If
you wake up on your back, that's okay. Waking up is your body's
way of telling you to change positions.
If you feel a constant, dull low back pain, it can possibly be
a sign of premature labor. If it is accompanied by dizziness,
bleeding or breaking of your waters, contact your care giver
immediately.
YOUR BABY
Your baby is doing a lot of his or her own bodily functions
now. Kidneys are functioning, muscles are working and growing
and your baby is beginning to make faces. Hair is beginning to
grow on the scalp. Your baby's skin is still translucent a bit
wrinkly. Your baby won't get fat layers until later in the
pregnancy to help fill out the skin and create that cute little
baby everyone will be oohing and ahhing about. Your baby's
heart now pumps 25 quarts of blood every single day. At around
four inches long, your baby is getting bigger every day. He or
she weighs about three ounces this week.
YOUR BODY
You may be experiencing nasal congestion and an increased sense
of smell all at the same time. Nasal congestion is a part of
pregnancy, unfortunately. Some women also experience more
nosebleeds than normal during pregnancy as well. If you find
yourself getting a lot of nosebleeds, talk to your care giver.
It could be due to high blood pressure.
You may also find that your nipples are even more tender than
they have been. It may be difficult to stand the sensation of
your clothing up against them. By having a soft, supportive
bra, this can help you stay more comfortable. If you find your
breasts leak a bit, you can also slip a soft cloth nursing pad
into your bra to soak up the excess. This will protect your
clothing and make you feel more comfortable.
