You're Pregnant! Week
23
By now, you've probably perused every baby name book on the
market. But there are so many names… how do you choose?
Usually, you and your partner will find a few that you like.
The problem may arise when they aren't the same names. Will you
use family names to honor older members of your family or a
special friend? Do you follow religious or cultural customs in
choosing a name? Do you like trendy names? No matter what helps
you choose the type of name you're drawn to, there are some
good rules of thumb to follow when choosing a name for your
little bundle of joy.
• Make sure the name sounds good with your last name. Names
with repetitive sounds may prove to be difficult later on, like
Rosemary Robinson.
• Call the name out loud a few times. Do you like it as well
out loud as you do when you see it written in a book?
• Can the name be made into a nickname? Do you like the
nickname associated with it?
• Look at the initials of the names you've chosen. Do they
spell anything that your child can be teased about later?
George Andrew Sherman may roll off the tongue great, but when
all his 9-year-old buddies realize his initials spell GAS, it
may not be so wonderful for young George.
If you haven't found out what sex your baby is, you get twice
the fun, since you get to pick out both a boy's name and a
girl's name just in case.
YOUR BABY
Baby's arms and legs are more in proportion to what you'll see
in your newborn by this week. The nostrils have lost their
plugs so he or she can practice breathing through their nose
(yes, they are breathing amniotic fluid at this point… the
little sacs in their lungs have not opened up yet, so it is
fine). Capillaries are forming, making baby look pink. Baby's
lungs are growing more blood vessels this week. Can you believe
that your baby's spine is now made up of some 33 rings, 150
joints and over 1,000 ligaments? Your body grew that! Baby is
now about 13.5 inches long and weighs about a pound and a half,
more or less.
YOUR BODY
Have you been woken up with leg cramps yet? If not, you're in
for a rude awakening. It happens to most pregnant women at some
point in their pregnancy. The excruciating pain of a leg cramp
in the middle of the night can be terribly annoying. If you
find yourself having these nightly events, add more calcium to
your diet. If you're allergic to dairy, there is also calcium
in fish, broccoli, tofu and almonds, to name a few non-dairy
sources. The best way to prevent leg cramps besides adding more
calcium is to stretch before you go to sleep. This helps the
circulation to flow after a long day on your feet. While you
are lying down in bed, point your toes up to the ceiling. Relax
your feet and legs, but don't point your toes downward. This
can actually cause a muscle cramp. Do this a few times each
night before you sleep.
