You're Pregnant! Week
9
Are you getting tired of being tired? The good news is that
soon you'll have some energy back! The fatigue of early
pregnancy usually becomes a distant memory once you hit the
second trimester. In the meantime, try to sleep at least nine
hours every night, eat small frequent meals that are high in
nutrition, drink plenty of water during the day, and learn to
say no when others ask you to join yet another committee or
babysit. Try to fit in a nap during the day. Remember to take
your vitamins and exercise a little every day. Don't be afraid
to ask others for help. This may be a difficult step for some
women, but you can do it. If you do all these things and you
are still extremely tired, you may need a blood test for
anemia. Anemia can make you very tired because you don't have
enough iron in your blood to carry oxygen around your body. The
sooner you find out you have anemia, the better off you
are.
YOUR BABY
This is your baby's first week as a fetus! Now all the baby's
organ systems are either functioning or at least well-along in
development. The body begins to grow rapidly from this point on
as the rest of the development takes place. The head will slow
down in its growth compared the last few weeks. Speaking of
your baby's head, it is currently about half the crown to rump
length of the fetus. This is the distance measured from the top
of the head to the rump. It's a little early to be deciding who
the baby looks like. His or her face is broad and the eyes are
far apart. The legs are very short with small thighs. The
baby's liver is already hard at work making new red blood
cells.
Your baby is about 2.5 inches long from crown to rump and
weighs three-tenths of an ounce.
YOUR BODY
Early pregnancy may be getting a bit monotonous for you by now.
Fatigue, nausea and tender body areas may be starting to feel
endless. Most women feel relief from most of those symptoms as
the first trimester ends. You may be noticing a little bit of
roundness to your belly.
If you are noticing your pregnancy symptoms more strongly than
most, you may be expecting multiples. If your care giver also
suspects this, you will most likely have an ultrasound to
discover if there are more than one little one lurking inside.
If you do find out you are expecting more than one baby, you
need to make doubly sure each calorie counts nutritionally.
With care, you can birth multiples with healthy birth weights
that make it to term.
If you are carrying multiples, now is the time to start
planning. Adding a new addition to the family is always a time
of transition, but with more than one newborn at a time, you
may want to enlist some help for after the babies are born, if
not before. Take the time to do some research. Meet other
parents of multiples and find out what worked and didn't work
for them.
