Traditional Baby Strollers

Strollers that fit into this category are designed for everyday use.  Most of these strollers are fully reclining with leg holes that close, and can accommodate children from infants to toddlers.  They are often mid-weight, and can come with such accessories such as five-point harnesses, cupholders, and trays.  Several models even have air-filled tires for a smoother ride.  Some very versatile and convenient traditional strollers allow you to attach infant car seats to them.  When the child outgrows this option, it can be converted back into a regular stroller.

Pros: Often fairly lightweight and convenient.

Cons: Heavier models are difficult to carry on public transportation or to use in buildings with escalators. And you still need a car seat.

Umbrella Baby Strollers</a>

An umbrella stroller is a light-weight, folding baby stroller that usually features upside-down-J-shaped handles similar to the handle on an umbrella. Umbrella strollers can vary from pared-down versions to upscale, feature-packed models, and the prices on these styles varies accordingly. An umbrella stroller is a useful item for parents who travel often. These strollers fold easily and can be stashed in a vehicle trunk without taking up too much room. Umbrella strollers are also a nice option in crowded areas, as they are much easier to maneuver around obstacles and through tight corridors than their larger stroller counterparts.

Pros: Lightweight, compact, ideal for quick trips and errands or for travel.

Cons: You still need a car seat, and this type of stroller typically can’t be used for an infant.

Travel Systems

Travel systems, also known as car seat strollers, offer convenience for busy parents. Basically, they consist of seats that can be easily attached to your stroller and your car. No need for two separate, and sometimes costly, seats. Before buying this kind of stroller you must check the compatibility of your car.

Pros: Allows adults to move a sleeping baby undisturbed from car to stroller.

Cons: You’ll need to buy a new convertible car seat when the baby outgrows the infant seat.

Jogging Baby Strollers

Jogger strollers are for jogging or running with mom or dad. (Few all-terrain strollers can be used for jogging; read the manual or check the box, or visit the store or the manufacturer’s Web site for recommended uses.)

Pros: Also good for off-road use.

Cons: Not suitable for babies younger than 6 months. Can be unstable when the rear wheels are lifted over a curb. May be tougher to steer than traditional strollers, since they have a fixed (non-swiveling) front wheel.

All-Terrain Baby Strollers

Air-filled rubber tires, true suspension, and increased frame durability make these strollers–designed to handle off-road challenges as easily as the shopping mall, an obvious choice for many parents. The real trick is finding that lightweight and compact all-terrain stroller without compromising the durability or versatility of the stroller. Fortunately, every year brings new innovations that make last year’s all-terrain models look a bit sluggish and bulky by comparison.

Pros: Give a relatively smooth ride on off-road surfaces. Pneumatic tires can improve the ride.

Cons: Can be large and heavy; often don’t fold compactly. Because of that, not practical for everyday use. Also not suited for jogging, unless the manufacturer specifies.

Double or Tandem Baby Strollers

Some models seat children side-by-side; tandems seat one child behind the other or face-to-face. Some can accommodate newborns in infant car seats.

Pros: The only way to push two children in one stroller.

Cons: The only way to push two children in one stroller.

I am 26 weeks pregnant and I plan to breast feed my daughter exclusively! I also want to pump my milk so that her dad and others can feed her. What types of breast pumps worked the best for you! I hear the electric ones can get pretty expensive and the manual ones aren’t to good! What worked for you? Thanks for answering!
Any pump made by Medela is good. Don’t be fooled by someone telling you that a manual is bad. They aren’t great for daily use, but if you get a good quality manual pump you are much better off than a low quality electric. My general rule of thumb is if the electric costs less than $150 you are wasting your money. The cheap electrics will really tear your nipples up!! Avoid shopping places like Walmart for your pump. They are more focused on carrying products that will make them the most profit, even if they are worthless. Target is a much better store to look at if you are interested in actually buying one. I am currently saving to buy a Medela Pump in Style, which is the only retail pump that contains hospital technology. It is about $279, but very worth the money. You would be suprised at how much more milk you are able to pump with a good quality pump. The quality makes all the difference. Until I get the money though, I’m making do with my Medela Harmony manual pump. They are around $35 in stores, but mine was given to me by the WIC lactation consultant in my area. It works just fine for my needs at the moment. I get much more out of it than I did with the $40 evenflo electric that I bought with my first child! I actually choose the manual over the evenflo! Honestly, I trust anything with the name Medela on it. Many companies out there make pumps, but a majority of them are first and foremost bottle companies. Their main priority is to sell bottles and bottle supplies. Medela is exclusively a breastfeeding company. They are most commonly used in hospitals as well. They are constantly striving to make breastfeeding a better experiance for mom and baby. Other than that, you can always check your local WIC office. Some states will provide a double electric pump for exclusively breastfeeding moms. I know Oklahoma, Texas, and California do. Oklahoma gives out the Ameda Purely Yours double electric pump. I’ve never seen them in stores here and have read very few reviews, but I took a breastfeeding class and the Lactation consultant teaching it said they are pretty good. You really need to decide how you are going to use the pump before you buy. The manuals are best for occasional use. They are great for something like an occasional bottle or building up a little bit of emergency stash. I use mine at the start of every feeding because my milk comes out to fast for my baby. I can also keep it in my diaper bag for emergency situations. If something like this is all you are planning on doing, I’d recomend just spending your money on the manual rather than wasting it on a big fancy one. The Medela Harmony is great. It is comfortable to use and has 2 different types of sucking simulations you can use. If you are going to need to pump to go back to work or something you might consider an electric pump. Most moms agree that the double electrics are best because they are quicker, but the singles are cheaper. You have to weigh whether the time or money issue is more important. If worse comes to worse, go ask a lactation consultant which pump she would recomend for you. Good luck and congrats!
