Traveling with an infant brings unique challenges for first time parents. Car seats, diaper bags, changes of clothing and more become part of the new travel routine. Along with all of the standard baby gear, there may be one more thing to consider bringing along: an infant passport.

Passports are becoming increasingly important. Most borders cannot be crossed today without a passport, even the Mexican and Canadian borders. Infants are not exempt from this requirement. You cannot add an infant to a U.S. passport. Every citizen, including babies, must have his or her own passport. Anyone trying to cross a border with an infant who doesn’t have a passport may be regarded with suspicion. Carrying a passport for an infant when you travel is just as important as carrying your own.

New parents often wonder when they should apply for an infant passport. The best answer is: as soon as possible. Obtaining a passport for an infant should be considered routine, just as applying for a birth certificate is. Even if you don’t have international travel plans in your immediate future, it’s still a good idea to apply for one. It usually takes about six weeks to have your application processed. Those who want to expedite the process and receive a passport in about two weeks can pay an extra fee of $35. However, by simply applying for it early on you can avoid this fee. You’ll also avoid the stress of trying to obtain a passport while busy making travel plans.

Infant passports are obtained in the same manner as a child or adult passport. Infant passport applications may be downloaded from various travel service providers and government agencies. You may also obtain one in person from your local post office or immigration office. Infant passport requirements include:

*Presentation of your baby’s birth certificate. If your child was born outside the United States, you must present the child’s Naturalization Certificate or Certificate of Citizenship along with the birth certificate.

*Two official passport photos. They must be regulation size (2 inches by 2 inches) and should be taken by a professional photographer. Home-produced photographs are not accepted.

*The application fee, which is $40. Remember, it will cost an extra $35 if you need to obtain it faster than six weeks.

The baby need not appear in person to be granted a passport. However, the person applying for it must be able to vouch for the identity of the child and present his or her own identification. Infant passports are valid for five years.

Traveling aside, it’s useful to obtain a passport for an infant for other reasons. It is often the only form of official picture ID that a baby can obtain. Sometimes picture ID is required for registering for preschool or kindergarten, or may even be required for some domestic airline flights. Having official picture identification for your child is never a bad idea. Applying for it right from the beginning may save parents from unforeseen trouble down the road.

By Jackie Durnin

Baby sign language has been shown to very beneficial to a baby’s language development. So much so, that the typical language parameters of children are changing thanks to a child’s ability to express themselves through baby sign from as early as 6 months of age.

So how can a parent know if their child’s language, listening and speech skills are developing normally? All children develop their language, listening and speech skills at different rates. Below you will find a chart based on a non-signing child’s typical language development but this does not take into consideration the use of baby sign language with children. Please note that this table is a guide only.

Your Child’s Age

Typical Language Development:-

By Age One:

Turns head toward the source of the sound.

Watches your face when you speak.

Responds to familiar sounds such as the car in the driveway, the dog barking, the door bell ringing, the telephone ringing etc.

Responds to their name.

Understands simple instructions such as “no”.

Tries to repeat your sounds or familiar sounds from their environment.

Uses one or more word with meaning.

Babbles (says “ba-ba” or “ma-ma”).

____________________________________________

By 17 Months:

Points to objects, pictures & people.

Most vocabulary is mainly nouns ie. People, place, animal or thing.

Tries to imitate easy words.

By The Age of Two Points and says the name to simple body parts such as “nose”.

Starts to combine words such as “more milk”.

Can name a number of objects in their environment.

Can use some pronouns such as “He”, “My” or “I”. However “My” & “I” often get confused.

Understands simple sentences such as “show me your eyes (nose, mouth, hair)”.

____________________________________________

By Age Three:

Speech is more accurate and they can be understood by familiar adults.

Uses three to four word sentences.

Is using some past tense such as “jumped”.

Uses pronouns I, you, me correctly.

Recognises their own needs such as hunger or thirst.

Have favourite books and television shows.

Knows around three prepositions such as “in”, “on” or “under”.

Is using some plurals such as “socks” or “shoes”.

So how does baby sign language change the above milestones?

The main difference is your baby’s ability to begin communicating through sign earlier than their vocal skills will allow them. By the age of two, while non-signing babies are combining words such as “more milk”, parents of signing babies have experienced two-word communication through baby sign language as early as 14 months of age. This is a 10-month gap in communication. Dr Acredolo & Dr Goodwyn further highlighted these benefits in a study where three-year-old signing children had developed the language and vocabulary skills to a four-year-old.

This does not mean that a signing baby will necessarily speak earlier than a non signing baby but that they will have the ability to communicate their thoughts, wants and needs through sign while being pre-verbal.

This ability for children to communicate their needs and wants causes children to be less frustrated and research has shown that it has great language development and vocabulary building benefits.

Give your child a head start in language development with Australian baby sign language.

I like many parents, especially first time parents, have had a issue with getting my child to sleep through the night. If you could do it wrong, I did it! Well I had to seek out answers to what was happening with my baby daughter and what we could do to fix it.

First, a little background in what is happening with your baby. When a baby is in the womb, they get the opposite of what the mom gets. During the daytime the sun provides chemicals in your body to help keep you awake. Your baby gets these chemicals at night. When your baby is born they still are on a schedule of the night. One of the first tips for a new baby is to get them in a sun filled room so their body starts producing these chemicals. This will help them to start to sleep longer through the night so you aren’t so beat through the day!

Now that your baby sleeps at night there is a very important thing to remember. Children like adults form associations with sleeping. For example, try to go to sleep tonight without your pillow. You may get some sleep but you will probably toss and turn all night and you will wake feeling very unrested. This is because you have created an association with sleeping and your pillow. Babies develop associations too. So if you help them to create an association with rocking them to sleep, or any other undesirable association, you may find yourself doing this for ever because they wake up and then need to be rocked to fall back to sleep. For me it became very difficult because we ended up having to break that association. In order to do this we had to put our baby to sleep and let her cry. Then after 30 seconds we went in and reassured her everything was ok and put her back down to sleep. This went on constantly until she would fall asleep. Each night we would extend the length of time until it became longer and longer. After a couple of weeks we put her down and she would fall fast asleep and sleep through the night. I guarantee this is much harder on the parents than it was on my daughter.

Now this doesn’t mean that you can never rock your child to sleep especially if they are having a rough night. But if you make a habit of doing it everytime you may find this is where you travel down a path that you wish you had not.

I have not used this myself, but I have talked with moms who have used the womb sounds to help their newborns sleep and have had good success with them. Other things that will help baby sleep include setting consistent nap routines and bedtime rituals. Make sure your child gets enough eating in during the day so they won’t be tempted to wake to eat throughout the night. Sometimes they just get so busy playing and exploring they forget to eat.

Keeping baby asleep can be done by making sure they’ve been fed, changed and are comfortable. A nice, dark, quiet room can help. Music or white noise can help mask household noises.

Not all babies are alike and nothing works everytime even for the same child. Remember to always reassure your baby that everything is ok so they feel secure.

My wifes finding it hard breast feeding our 4mth old son and wants to put him on formula. she says she wants to combine feed him (breast & formula). is this advisable? i dont agree to do this as i think breast feeding is better for him… can anyone please offer me any advice?
What is it she’s having trouble with? If it’s a question of feeling like she’s nursing ALL the time, that’ll pass as he gets more efficient at draining a breast. Also he can start some solids at 6 months, which won’t cut out breastfeeding, but can replace some of it. At 6 months I started giving my daughter some rice cereal with pumped milk in it. If she’s tired from night feedings, consider cosleeping so she can nurse lying down and get some sleep. That saved me!! Perhaps she could be persuaded to pump sometimes and let you take some feedings. Breastmilk is far and away the BEST food ever, so point that out. Also, germs transferred to your baby enter the breast and come back out to him as antibodies, so it’s so good for their health. Good for you for realizing formula isn’t good enough! Be sensitive though, because I’m sure she’s exhausted and liable to be crabby!

Traditional Baby Strollers

Strollers that fit into this category are designed for everyday use. Most of these strollers are fully reclining with leg holes that close, and can accommodate children from infants to toddlers. They are often mid-weight, and can come with such accessories such as five-point harnesses, cupholders, and trays. Several models even have air-filled tires for a smoother ride. Some very versatile and convenient traditional strollers allow you to attach infant car seats to them. When the child outgrows this option, it can be converted back into a regular stroller.

Pros: Often fairly lightweight and convenient.

Cons: Heavier models are difficult to carry on public transportation or to use in buildings with escalators. And you still need a car seat.

Umbrella Baby Strollers</a>

An umbrella stroller is a light-weight, folding baby stroller that usually features upside-down-J-shaped handles similar to the handle on an umbrella. Umbrella strollers can vary from pared-down versions to upscale, feature-packed models, and the prices on these styles varies accordingly. An umbrella stroller is a useful item for parents who travel often. These strollers fold easily and can be stashed in a vehicle trunk without taking up too much room. Umbrella strollers are also a nice option in crowded areas, as they are much easier to maneuver around obstacles and through tight corridors than their larger stroller counterparts.

Pros: Lightweight, compact, ideal for quick trips and errands or for travel.

Cons: You still need a car seat, and this type of stroller typically can’t be used for an infant.

Travel Systems

Travel systems, also known as car seat strollers, offer convenience for busy parents. Basically, they consist of seats that can be easily attached to your stroller and your car. No need for two separate, and sometimes costly, seats. Before buying this kind of stroller you must check the compatibility of your car.

Pros: Allows adults to move a sleeping baby undisturbed from car to stroller.

Cons: You’ll need to buy a new convertible car seat when the baby outgrows the infant seat.

Jogging Baby Strollers

Jogger strollers are for jogging or running with mom or dad. (Few all-terrain strollers can be used for jogging; read the manual or check the box, or visit the store or the manufacturer’s Web site for recommended uses.)

Pros: Also good for off-road use.

Cons: Not suitable for babies younger than 6 months. Can be unstable when the rear wheels are lifted over a curb. May be tougher to steer than traditional strollers, since they have a fixed (non-swiveling) front wheel.

All-Terrain Baby Strollers

Air-filled rubber tires, true suspension, and increased frame durability make these strollers–designed to handle off-road challenges as easily as the shopping mall, an obvious choice for many parents. The real trick is finding that lightweight and compact all-terrain stroller without compromising the durability or versatility of the stroller. Fortunately, every year brings new innovations that make last year’s all-terrain models look a bit sluggish and bulky by comparison.

Pros: Give a relatively smooth ride on off-road surfaces. Pneumatic tires can improve the ride.

Cons: Can be large and heavy; often don’t fold compactly. Because of that, not practical for everyday use. Also not suited for jogging, unless the manufacturer specifies.

Double or Tandem Baby Strollers

Some models seat children side-by-side; tandems seat one child behind the other or face-to-face. Some can accommodate newborns in infant car seats.

Pros: The only way to push two children in one stroller.

Cons: The only way to push two children in one stroller.

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ant_Arthur]Ant Arthur

I remember very clearly the first day we brought our oldest daughter home from the hospital. Lucky for me my husband is a car seat technician, so I had no worries that we had installed our Graco infant carrier correctly. Interestingly, my husband procrastinated installing the seat until the day I was scheduled to go in for my induction (my baby was a week overdue).

I think until that point the idea of having a baby wasn’t real. Reality sure struck like a hammer however a few days later, when we packed our bags up and prepared to bring our bundle of joy home. The nurse in the maternity ward was insistent about checking to make sure our baby was nestled safely into her carseat. She took great care to coach me about how to put the baby in the carseat and support her head. She also told me of the steps I should take to make sure the straps weren’t too tight and adjusted properly. Of course, she knew of my husbands experience but still walked down to make sure we had installed the car seat properly. She wanted to make sure the seat was in the middle of the backseat.

My husband and I smiled at each other. Once we got in the car however we realized how terrified we were. That was the first time I have ever seen my husband drive 20 miles an hour down the highway back home. Normally the drive was about 25 minutes to the hospital. It probably took us close to an hour to get home that day. Looking back, we are lucky we didn’t get into an accident for driving too slow!

Selecting The Perfect Carseat
Of course, that was the fun part of the story. Actually finding a car seat was a mindboggling task. As first time parents, everyone and their mother had an opinion about the best type of car seat for us to use. There were loads of fans of the Graco brand (which we finally settled on). I had one friend drag me to Babies R Us and insist I try out an Eddie Bauer model. Still others looked at me and laughed when I told them I wasn’t going to buy a travel system that came with a car seat and stroller. Others suggested starting right off the bat with a convertible car seat. And everyone, I mean EVERYONE was positive their opinion was the best.

Eventually we decided to stick with the Graco infant carrier because it was convenient. Of course, we had a porky 8 pound baby that outgrew her seat within 8 months. Actually, technically she probably outgrew it closer to seven. After that we decided to go with a convertible car seat. While many parents suggested starting out with the convertible seat, I am actually glad we did have the infant carrier to start with. For a few months anyway, I started developing enviable biceps from carrying around my large, bouncing baby girl. I sort of missed that once we changed to the convertible.

There are many things to look for when deciding the right carseat. Here is what I learned from my car seat shopping adventures:

You may change your mind midway through. We thought the infant carrier would last us at least a year. As it turns out, we had to shop for another carseat much sooner than expected. If you think you will have a large baby (hint, your size or your partners, or even your mothers history might clue you in) shop for an infant carrier with a higher weight range. Some only carry a baby to 20 pounds, while others go to 22 (and two pounds is a world of difference for a baby).

Keep in mind the advice of others, but remember you know best when it comes to your lifestyle and preferences. You should select the carseat you are most comfortable with, not the one someone insists you buy because they like it.
Consider a convertible seat. They’ll last you a lifetime.
Remember your child will continue to need a carseat until they are about 80 pounds. Keep this in mind when investing in a carseat.
Look for a seat with washable and removable fabric. Trust me, your child will dirty the seat before you know it!

Last but not least, try not to get overwhelmed by the many accessories and extra features available. All you really need is a safe seat with a latching belt. Cup holders, toy attachments and other things are secondary to this.
